Britain preparing to double troop presence in Eastern Europe

As part of NATO’s mission to protect countries along its eastern flank, Britain is considering to double its troop numbers.

In response to a recent Russian military buildup around Ukraine, UK officials are heading to NATO headquarters next week to assess the situation. PM Boris Johnson is aiming to send a “clear message” to Russia with UK officials expected to agree a package of measures.

Additional troops, fighter jets and warships could be deployed within weeks as part of a beefed up presence. As a NATO member, the UK currently has several hundred troops stationed in Estonia and Poland.

Britain recently provided defensive munitions to Ukraine and has sent a small contingent of military trainers to the region.
